The 100th Anniversary 'Mac' started yesterday in light southerly sinds. Currently winds are still from the south along the course at around 10 to 15 knots.
This breeeze should ensure the fleet moderately quick offwind conditions. Overnight it is expected that the fleet saw some thunderstorm activity.

At 1004 this morning the 60 foot catamaran Stars and Stripes finished the race. According to Chiagago Yacht Club officials it has yet to be determined whether this is a record setting voyage or not. Since Stars and Stripes sailed in the 'exhibition division' officials have not decided whether they will be the new record holder.
The rest of the fleet is off of Muskegon Michigan beating into North Winds. This afternoon will reveal more of the location of the fleet as they call in and report position via VHF radio. Officals expect some the bigger boats in the fleet to be at Grays Reef around 1500 this afternoon.

At 13:15 ET, three boats were visible between Sleeping Bear Point and South Manitou Island entering the Manitou Passage. No sail numbers were visible from shore, but the lead boat had a white spinnaker with a large blue patch, the second boat close behind had a red spinaker, and the third about 10 minutes hehind had a blue spinaker.
As of 0738 Monday morning 23 of the fleet of 299
boats have reached the Mackinac Island finishing line.

Sayonara fell an excruciating 2 minutes and 4 seconds short of the record. Owner Larry Ellison told the Chicago Tribune, "I don't think we would have changed anything. But there must have been 100 places that we could have saved two minutes.......".
Meanwhile Stars and Strips has been credited with an official elpased time of 19 hours and 50 minutes. Stars and Stripes will not receive the first to finish trophy. Fosset believes that since he was in a class of the race, and since it was officiallu timed he should have the record. More than likely the World Sailing Speed Record Council will recoginize the record.
