The Chicago Yacht Club Race to
Mackinac is perennially one of the landmark events of the Lake
Michigan maritime calendar. Known as the Chi-Mac, Chicago
Mackinac or simply "The Mac," this is the race for
Great Lakes sailors.
The race takes more than 300 boats
with crew in excess of 3000 from the harbor off of Chicago up Lake
Michigan and through the Straits of Mackinac to end at beautiful
Mackinaw Island, Michigan.
With racers coming from around the world this
race is special to the participants and even shoreline observers who
follow the fleet up the western coast of Michigan.
Participation in the race is by invitation only from the Chicago
Yacht Club. The prestigious running of the Chicago Yacht Club
Race to Mackinac will celebrate 96 runnings in 2002. The race
was absent from the "Big Lake" in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902,
1903, 1917, 1918, 1919 and 1920. -- MORE
