. 2001 Chicago Mackinac Race Updates - July 15 AM

Larry Ellison's Farr 81, Sayonara reports a narrow lead over the GL 70 Decision, estimated to be two miles ahead of decision as of 6:00 am.  Winds are moving at about 8-9 knots and Sayonara is moving ahead under the power of its mainsail and masthead asymmetrical.   During the overnight hours the boat saw Decision out in front of them for a period of time and now the crew of Ellison's boat is saying "its our turn."  (approx. 6:00 am July 15)

Mirage, one of 13 Santa Cruiz 70s in this years race reported a tough time overnight with frequent wind shifts.  Mirage crew say that Piper is out in front and Evolution is right with her with Mirage following,  then Tiger and Equation. A little further back are boats like Blondie, Nitemare, Windancer and Chance.   Weather is a bit overcast with the boat coming closer to the shore than the rest of the fleet in order to gain some type of land effect.  (approx. 6:45 am July 15)

Salsa, a 43-foot J/130, reports to be 160 miles from Chicago.  Saying it has been a good downwind run.  Wind speed of up to 15 knots overnight resulted in boat speeds of 10 to 11 which is now reduced to about 7 knots.  (approx. 7:00 am July 15)

Eagle — Sydney 38 reported to be ten miles off shore just north of Little Sable Point, Michigan.  The breeze had been variable between 8 to 12 knots.  There do not appear to be any other boats very close by.  Picant seem to be a bit ahead of Eagle and one of the Farr 395s behind them.  A freighter was spotted well to the west of them making what appeared to be a deliberate effort to stay away from the fleet. (approx. 7:00 am July 15)

The multi-hull High Priority 2 reported being fifteen miles off shore near Little Sable Point.  All of the other multihulls appear to be to the rear of High Priority 2.  They reported passing up to 150 boats over night and can see that there appears to be a number of the larger boats in front of them, however they can not be clearly identified. (approx. 7:00 am July 15)

The Ericson 35 Providence reports a fairly uneventful race so far.  They are just "searching for air" in what so far has been a very uneventful race.  Their location is off the Wisconsin shore about 22 miles east of Sheboygan, cruising along at 5.5 knots on starboard with a spinnaker up and staysail and full main.
