. 2001 Chicago Mackinac Race Updates - July 16 AM

The J/130 Salsa reports moving along well.  They have experienced a nice breeze for sometime now.  It has been a good sail overnight making 11 knots of boat speed at times.  The boat is now located about 22 miles west of Little Traverse Bay and aobut 24 miles south and west of Gray's reef.  Salsa anticipates a finish in about four hours.  (approx 7:00 AM, July 16)

The multi-hulled, High Priority 2 expects to finish the race by 10:30 AM on July 16.  The boat is about 8.3 miles from the bridge and reported to be doing "great".   There was one run over night where High Priority 2 completed 50 miles in about four hours, traveling  from the north Manitou light to just short of Grey's Reef in that amount of time.  They were reaching with the screacher and main and jib with winds of only 6 to 8 knots ... but they were flying.  Some of the boats they passed include the Eagle,  a lot of Farr 40s and at least one 50-footer. Over the course of the race so far, the boat reported a top speed of about 17.8. Right they are beating and  crossing some boats and just plain doing good.  The crew predicts they will be the first multi to finish. (approx. 7:30 AM, July 16)

Providence , the Ericson 35 owned by Gerry Miarecki reports great enthusiasm.  Being a section 9 boat with section 1 and 2 boats in sight this captain and crew is very encouraged.  The wind is currently about 10 knots of with from about 194 degrees.  With about 40 miles to go until Grey's Reef, they don't see any boats from their section around them.   Overnight conditions were reported as great for Providence with winds of 16 knots until early morning and up to 22 at times.  (approx. 7:30 AM, July 16)
